ADHD Definitions

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD is one of the most common disorders among children, as many as 2 million are effected. It is developmental issue. That is, ADHD differs from the dimension of "normal" traits by degree. Motor response inhibition is the primary construct not inattention. There is a significant delay in the internalization of language and inhibiting responses. In layman’s terms, the sensory inhibitors of the brain have not been fully developed to the same degree as others. People with ADHD receive the full impact of sensory stimulation. Colors, motion, sound, light, shapes, and changes stimulate and impact the ADHD brain to a greater extent than others. People with ADHD cannot adequately screen stimulation and are frequently in sensory over stimulated. On the other side of the human spectrum are those who can filter out everything. We all know someone who can bury himself or herself in a book and not be distracted by anything. The ADHD person is distracted by everything. So when ADHD children are trying their very best to concentrate on their schoolwork, they are distracted by everything around them. They are often considered not well motivated to pay attention, perceived as unwilling to apply themselves and very frequently called a "lazy" kid. A substantial gap exists in understanding these developmental issues.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

50 to 65% of children with ADHD tend to have another condition called Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Children often overreact or lash out when they feel bad about themselves. They may be stubborn, have outbursts of temper or act belligerent or defiant. Sometimes this progresses to more serious Conduct Disorders (CD). Children with this combination of problems are at risk of serious trouble at school, and even with the police. The constant reminders of how poorly we ADHD people perform leads to the temptation to get back at the system. A system we perceive to have created high expectations that we cannot live up to and those in the system who have failed to help relieve the enormous pressures of our failures. ODD is a product of " I would if I could and you don’t believe me".

Learning Disabled

Persons with a learning disability (LD) usually have a normal or above–normal intelligence and the innate ability to learn at the same rate as others. However, they function at a lower level because they have problems with the processes most people use to organize and understand information. They usually are auditory or visual learners, but rarely both. They have trouble with one or more of the following skills: listening, thinking, verbal communication, reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic and motor coordination. Persons with a learning disability might appear awkward due to problems with eye-hand coordination. They may exhibit signs of restlessness or frustration due to short attention spans.
